Success in Career Development is very similar to finding an ideal destination in an unknown city.

Imagine you are in a new city and want to find a location, like the address of a cousin you lost, or the location of your next employer, or the your next apartment? It is difficult, right? Of course if you look into finding a more generic item, like a the best shopping center or the nearest hotel, then you have more options. Anyway, you have a few options.

Some people try to find everything by themselves, doesn’t matter how long it will take. The others may search an info center to buy a compass and a roadmap. Others may ask someone to help them, or guide them. Of course if you value your time, you may just take a suitable taxi, who knows the city very well. It is exactly the same options you have in a career development.

The success in a career development can be very difficult, specifically for the people coming from a different country, different culture and different field. What you usually need is to know where you are, where you plan to go and learn about your options. There is absolutely no problem to do-it-yourself or take an all inclusive career autopilot program. But most important is that you should know you have several options.

When it comes to career success in an hightech field, there are usually three ways you should know. You can go for an academic career, an industrial career or an entrepreneurial and self-employed career. Each of them have their pros and cons.

They are very much different in terms of skill requirements, target industries, job security, work load, life style and a lot more.

Even a fully academic position like a PhD or Postdoc can be done in different ways. Here is an example:

Academic – The student continues at a university (most commonly the one they completed their PHD in) and conducts research in a particular area that the university is interested in.
Industry – The student works with a non-university company to conduct research and development in a very specific area that the company is interested in. Typically, the company will engage a postdoc student with the end goal of being able to develop and release a new product, with the research of the postdoc.
Career-oriented – this type of postdoc position focuses on the career of the student themselves, rather than the interests of a university or a company.
